Cornwall is Home to The World’s Largest Indoor Rainforest
You may already know that South Cornwall is home to the Eden Project, but do you know what it is?
This impressive undertaking was created when a sterile pit was transformed into a thriving ecosystem — the world’s largest indoor rainforest — beginning in 2001.
Developed as a way of fostering a deep respect for the natural world and based on the principle that everything on Earth is interconnected, this incredible celebration of nature is an entertaining and educational treat for all the family.
Cornwall Has Its Own Language
Did you know that Cornwall has its own language?
Kernowek — the Cornish native tongue — was spoken by the Cornish throughout the Middle Ages, only gradually becoming obsolete as English began to dominate. But this archaic language is not to be kept down forever..
Kernowek is currently experiencing something of a revival, as many Cornish folk strive to preserve their unique cultural heritage.
The First Cornish Pasties Were Made for Tin Miners
The world-famous Cornish pasty was originally made for tin miners as a convenient and hearty meal.
Pasties of all kinds were enjoyed by the wealthy and regal as far back as the 13th century. These Cornish pasty predecessors were stuffed with decadent fillings and offered in a variety of culinary contexts.
Later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, these tasty treats were made by Cornish miners’ wives, who used cheaper ingredients and engraved their husbands’ initials onto the pastry to confirm ownership.
Easy to carry and eat without cutlery, they were considered the perfect on-the-go meal for tin miners.
Cornwall Has the Longest Coastline in Britain
Cornwall has the longest coastline of any English county, stretching over 400 miles. This, coupled with the fact that it is also one of the sunniest towns in the UK, makes it a popular destination for beach lovers.
Cornwall Has Its Own Legendary Monster
This one is only allegedly based on fact, but it’s certainly a lot of fun! Cornwall has its own version of the Loch Ness Monster.
Rumour has it that the Cornish monster, known as the Morgawr, was first spotted at Pendennis Point in 1975 and is said to inhabit Falmouth Bay.
With the sunny Cornish weather on your side, you can now do all your family’s monster-spotting in comfort!
