What’s So Special about Fleet Lagoon?
28 / October / 2022
Fleet Lagoon is an area of water between Chesil Beach and the mainland. At over eight miles long and occupying 480 hectares, it’s England’s largest lagoon. Stretching from Abbotsbury in the west to Ferry Bridge in the east where it opens into the sea, the site has been described as the finest example of a lagoon of its type in the UK, so it’s well worth a visit. Here are some more reasons why it’s such a special place.
The Beauty
Fleet Lagoon offers a unique setting that’s a beautiful spot for ambles with plenty of photo worthy scenery. Designated An Area of Outstanding Beauty, the Fleet, which is totally unique to Chesil Beach, has to be seen to be believed. Surrounded by the 18-mile-long beach and framed by rural beauty, the Fleet makes a serene and beautiful setting for a UK getaway.
The Wildlife
Fleet Lagoon is an oasis of calm and a vital feeding area for wildlife. So it comes as no surprise that it has been designated as a Special Area of Conservation. In fact, the lagoon is protected under an array of national and international agreements, as well as being part of the famous World Heritage Jurassic Coast. Home to over 150 species of seaweed, 25 species of fish and 60 species of molluscs, the lagoon boasts a diverse range of animals, birds and plants that call it home.
The History
Fleet Lagoon has a rich history and was an important location in the Second World War. Due to the low population in the area, the Fleet was used for military training, including the testing of the Bouncing Bomb. There is an array of pillboxes located near the lagoon and other remaining historic structures that relate to the war.
Stories of past smuggling in the area add another level to the rich history of the Fleet. The lagoon was also the setting and inspiration for the novel about smuggling by J. Meade Faulkner, “Moonfleet” published in 1898.
