  • Chasing Rainbows & Scenic Trails: Spring Walks in Dorset & Cornwall

    02 / April / 2025

April brings longer days, brighter skies, and the perfect excuse to get outdoors. With National Walking Day on April 2nd and National Rainbow Day on April 3rd, there’s no better time to explore the stunning landscapes surrounding our parks. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a peaceful stroll, we’ve picked some lesser-known walking routes in Dorset and Cornwall that will help you enjoy the beauty of spring – and maybe even spot a rainbow along the way!

Hidden Gem Walks in Dorset & Cornwall

The Undercliff Walk, Lyme Regis to Axmouth (Dorset)

If you’re looking for a dramatic and secluded walk, the Undercliff National Reserve is a must-visit. This seven-mile route takes you through a unique coastal wilderness created by landslides, resulting in a lush, almost jungle-like landscape. Expect a mix of woodland, hidden glades, and glimpses of the sea – perfect for spotting spring wildflowers and maybe even a rainbow over the coastline after a passing shower!

Thorncombe Beacon to Eype Beach (Dorset)

This lesser-known coastal walk offers spectacular views with a good mix of challenge and reward. Starting from the high vantage point of Thorncombe Beacon, follow the undulating South West Coast Path towards Eype Beach, a more secluded spot compared to its famous neighbour, West Bay. If you’re lucky, the changing skies over the sea could give you the perfect rainbow backdrop.

The Cheesewring & Kilmar Tor (Cornwall)

Step off the beaten track and into Cornwall’s rugged moorland with a walk to The Cheesewring and Kilmar Tor. Located on Bodmin Moor, this route takes you past striking rock formations, ancient history and sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. It’s an atmospheric place, especially if spring showers roll through, leaving behind dramatic skies and the chance of a rainbow arching over the landscape.

    Lansallos to Lantic Bay (Cornwall)

For a coastal walk with a hidden treasure at the end, try the route from Lansallos to Lantic Bay. This lesser-known trail winds through the countryside and down to one of Cornwall’s most breathtaking secret beaches. Spring’s unpredictable weather can mean sunshine one moment and rain the next – but that just increases your chances of catching a rainbow as you descend towards the turquoise waters of Lantic Bay!

Springtime Weather – Embracing the Unexpected

April’s weather can be a little mischievous – one moment it’s sunshine, the next it’s a surprise shower! But rather than letting a little rain dampen your plans, why not embrace it? Springtime showers often lead to some of the most magical sights: fresh, glistening landscapes, dramatic clouds over the sea, and, of course, the potential for a stunning rainbow stretching across the sky.

With the fresh air on National Walking Day and the vibrant colours of National Rainbow Day, there’s no better time to lace up your walking boots and step outside. Whether you catch a glimpse of a rainbow over the Dorset coast or see the moors of Cornwall shine in the sun after a spring drizzle, these walks promise adventure, beauty, and a breath of fresh air.

So, this April, why not set out on a new path, embrace the unpredictable weather, and keep your eyes on the horizon for that perfect rainbow moment?
