Caring for Your Mental Health at Waterside: Our Sponsorship with Dorset Mind
04 / September / 2024
At Waterside, we believe that mental health is as important as physical health. This year, we are proud to be the charity partner of Dorset Mind, a local mental health support charity who deliver life changing support to countless individuals across the country. This partnership is particularly meaningful as we approach Positive Thinking Day and World Gratitude Day this September – two important reminders to focus on our mental well-being and expression of gratitude & appreciation for even the smallest of things, especially as we transition into the autumn and winter months.
As the days grow shorter and the temperatures gradually drop, it’s essential to prioritise self-care. The darker evenings and colder weather can naturally lead to a dip in mood, but there are many ways to nurture your mental health during this time. At Waterside, we offer a variety of activities and experiences designed to help you take care of your mind and body, ensuring that your holiday is as rejuvenating as it is enjoyable.
1. Connect with Nature
Walking through our beautiful landscapes, breathing in the fresh coastal air, or simply taking in the stunning views can have a profound impact on your mental well-being. Whether it’s a brisk walk along the beach, around our nature trails and lakes or a peaceful stroll through the countryside, connecting with nature is a simple yet powerful way to clear your mind.
2. Stay Active
From running and cycling to swimming and yoga, staying active is a proven way to boost your mood. At Waterside, you can enjoy a variety of physical activities that cater to all fitness levels. Our facilities include gyms, swimming pools, and plenty of open space for outdoor exercise.
3. Trying Something New
Engaging in new activities can be a great way to stimulate your mind and break out of a rut. Whether it’s trying out a new watersport, new foods or learning a new skill, challenging yourself in a supportive environment can provide a significant mental boost. Here at Waterside, we have something new for everyone to try from archery to aqua zorbing or fishing.
4. Practice Mindfulness
The tranquillity of Waterside’s coastal locations make each of our parks an ideal place for mindfulness and meditation. Take some time to sit quietly by the water, practice yoga, or even just spend a few moments in quiet reflection. Journaling is another great way to process your thoughts and feelings, helping you stay grounded and present.
5. Socialise and Connect
Human connection is vital for mental health, and at Waterside, there are plenty of opportunities to socialise and make new friends. Whether you’re joining in on a group activity, sharing a meal with loved ones or simply chatting with fellow holiday guests, fostering these connections and allowing time for bonding can help combat feelings of loneliness and isolation.
6. Indulge in Rest and Relaxation
Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your mental health is simply to rest. Take advantage of our comfortable accommodations to catch up on sleep, watch a film or series, make time for that hobby you’ve been wanting to get stuck into, or indulge in a soothing bath. Allow yourself time to slow down and recharge.
7. Blue Mind Theory
The soothing effects of being near water, often referred to as the “Blue Mind” theory, play a significant role in enhancing mental well-being. This concept suggests that being in, on, or around water can induce a meditative state, reducing stress and promoting relaxation. At Waterside, our coastal locations allow you to fully immerse yourself in the calming presence of the sea, lakes, or coastal rivers, offering a natural remedy for anxiety and a boost to your overall mood. Whether you’re listening to the gentle lapping of waves, taking a refreshing swim, or simply looking out at the horizon, the power of water to calm the mind and rejuvenate the spirit is undeniable.
8. Spending Time with Your Dog
Spending time with animals, especially dogs, has a profound impact on our mental health, providing comfort, reducing stress, and increasing feelings of happiness and connection. The simple act of petting a dog can release oxytocin, a hormone associated with bonding and relaxation, while also lowering cortisol levels, which are linked to stress. At Waterside, we understand the importance of these furry companions in enhancing well-being which is why our parks are dog-friendly. You don’t have to leave your four-legged friend behind; instead, bring them along on your self-care retreat. Enjoy peaceful walks, playtime by the water, or simply relax together in our serene surroundings, knowing that both you and your dog are benefiting from the therapeutic effects of each other’s company.
9. Fueling Yourself with Healthy Food
Eating healthy foods plays a crucial role in supporting mental health, as what we consume directly impacts brain function and mood regulation. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins provides essential nutrients that boost brain health, improve concentration and help manage stress. Beyond just eating well, the act of cooking or baking for yourself can also have a positive impact on your mental health. Engaging in the creative and mindful process of preparing meals can be therapeutic, offering a sense of accomplishment and control. Whether you’re trying out a new recipe or baking a favourite treat, the hands-on nature of cooking can reduce stress, increase mindfulness, and provide a delicious way to nourish your mind, body and soul. At Waterside, you can take advantage of the well-equipped kitchens in our variety of accommodations to create your own culinary delights, turning meal preparation into a fulfilling and health-boosting, fun activity.
10. Read a Book
Taking the time to read can have profound positive effects on your mental health, serving as a powerful tool for relaxation, stress reduction, and mental stimulation. Immersing yourself in a good book allows you to escape the pressures of daily life, providing a mental break that can reduce anxiety and promote a sense of calm. Reading also stimulates cognitive function, enhancing focus and concentration while expanding your imagination and empathy as you connect with different characters and perspectives. Whether it’s a novel, a self-help book, or even poetry, dedicating time to read at Waterside can be a valuable part of your self-care routine, enriching your mind and improving your overall mental well-being.
As we move into autumn and winter, it’s more important than ever to be mindful of our mental health. At Waterside, we’re committed to supporting you in this journey, providing a peaceful and nurturing environment where you can focus on self-care. Our partnership with Dorset Mind reflects our dedication to mental well-being, and we’re thrilled to contribute to their vital work in the community.
Take care of yourself, and we’ll take care of the rest.
