This small sand and shingle beach nestled within the Jurassic Coast is known for its geology. It’s a popular family beach during the summer season and perfect for kayaking or paddle boarding. Cutting through the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, the local part of the path boasts amazing geology and scenery. It’s easy to access from Waterside’s parks in Dorset and simple to navigate using the acorn symbol way markers.
Lodmoor is a quiet sanctuary for wildlife, set in the seaside town of Weymouth. The area is perfect for bird watchers as it attracts a huge variety including Bearded Tits, Cetti’s Warblers, Gulls, Ducks, Kingfishers and Winter Waders. With viewing points and pushchair-friendly nature trails, a visit to Lodmoor is a great way to get the whole family involved in nature.
A 4.7 mile circular walk starting at Bowleaze Cove Holiday Park & Spa along part of the South West Coast Path. This walk is packed with things to see including beautiful views of the coast, a Roman Temple and Villa and a chalk horse carved into the hillside. There are some gentle climbs and descents but it’s a great walk for the whole family.
Right on the shores of Bowleaze Cove, Southside Funfair brings all the excitement of a classic fairground with a spectacular coastal backdrop. Whether you’re after a thrilling activity or a trip down memory lane, there’s something for all ages.
Take in the breathtaking sea views as you drop from dizzying heights, spin through the air, or take a ride on a timeless carousel. Little ones can take a ride on the teacups or whizz down the helter skelter, while those feeling brave can test their nerve on the Ghost Train. Bumper cars, trampolines, soft play, and arcade games add to the mix, making it a great day out for all ages.
For a cultural trip out, visit the remains of this Romano-Celtic temple built circa 4th century AD. This English Heritage site is free to visit, allows dogs on leads and offers great views. Located just above Bowleaze Cove beach, the temple is in very easy reach of Bowleaze Cove Holiday Park & Spa.
Sand art has long been practiced in the Dorset area and this exhibition showcases some of the best sand artists in the world. There’s a huge range of sand art to see- big and small. Something for the whole family to enjoy.
The bay, stretching along Weymouth, includes several beaches, including the golden sands of Weymouth Beach itself. Sheltered from south-west winds, the waters here are great for sailing with the bay hosting sailing events in the 2012 Olympics. If you’re keen to get out on the water yourself, there are opportunities to take day trips, charter a fishing boat or even learn to sail.
Weymouth’s colourful and vibrant Harbour lies at the heart of the seaside town, offering a charming location to sit with your fish and chips as you watch the boats go by. Alternatively, treat yourself to a meal at one of the many restaurants that have made the harbour their home over the years. For those arriving by sea, short-term mooring is available within the inner harbour, suitable for Pontoon mooring for Vessels up to 8.5m (LOA) and Versadock mooring is also available if you are considering bringing your Jet Skis.
