1. Explore the Jurassic Coast

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Jurassic Coast stretches for 95 miles and offers breathtaking views, fossil hunting opportunities and scenic coastal walks. Visit iconic landmarks like Old Harry Rocks to take in the natural beauty of Dorset’s coastline.

2. Walk Along Chesil Beach

One of Dorset’s most famous natural features, Chesil Beach is an 18-mile-long pebble beach perfect for a peaceful stroll. While swimming isn’t recommended due to strong currents, the views are spectacular, especially at sunset.

3. Discover Durdle Door & Lulworth Cove

Two of the most photographed locations in Dorset, Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove offer dramatic coastal scenery. Pack a picnic and take a walk along the South West Coast Path for incredible views.

4. Visit Weymouth’s Sandy Beach

If you’re staying near Weymouth, the town’s golden sandy beach is free to enjoy. Spend a relaxing day building sandcastles, paddling in the sea or watching the world go by from the esplanade.

5. Roam the South West Coast Path

6. Wander Through Dorchester’s Borough Gardens

If you fancy a break from the coast, Borough Gardens in Dorchester is a beautifully maintained park with flower beds, a fountain, a bandstand and a play area for children. It’s a lovely spot for a relaxing afternoon. 

7. Discover the Cobb at Lyme Regis

Take a scenic walk along the historic Cobb in Lyme Regis, made famous by its appearance in literature and film. Enjoy the charming harbour views, browse the independent shops (window shopping is free!) or simply soak up the seaside atmosphere.

8. Visit Portland Bill Lighthouse

While there’s a fee to enter the lighthouse, you can enjoy the surrounding area of Portland Bill for free. The rugged cliffs and dramatic seascapes make for a great spot to explore and you might even spot some local seabirds or seals.

9. Admire the Ruins of Corfe Castle

While entry to Corfe Castle itself isn’t free, you can still admire its impressive ruins from various vantage points around the village. The nearby Purbeck Hills offer excellent walking trails with panoramic views of the castle and surrounding countryside

10. Stroll Through Abbotsbury’s Countryside

The village of Abbotsbury is surrounded by picturesque walking routes, including the Abbotsbury Hill viewpoint, where you can enjoy stunning views of Chesil Beach and the Jurassic Coast without paying an entry fee.

11. Spot Wildlife at RSPB Radipole Lake and Lodmoor

For nature lovers, RSPB Radipole Lake and Lodmoor in Weymouth offer fantastic wildlife-spotting opportunities. These nature reserves are home to a variety of birds, including kingfishers, marsh harriers and even otters if you’re lucky!

12. Explore Wareham Forest

For those who love woodland walks, Wareham Forest provides miles of trails to explore, whether you’re walking, cycling or even spotting wildlife. The Sika Trail is a particularly scenic route through the forest.

13. Visit Pool Quay and Harbourside

Poole’s historic quay is a great place to take a leisurely stroll, watch the boats go by and soak up the maritime atmosphere. The nearby Harbourside Park is also a lovely spot for a picnic with views across Poole Harbour.

14. Hunt for Fossils at Charmouth Beach

For a unique and educational experience, head to Charmouth Beach, one of the best places in the UK to find fossils. While guided tours are available for a fee, you can hunt for fossils along the beach for free. Just remember to check the tide times before you go!

15. Enjoy a Day at Upton Country Park

Just outside Poole, Upton Country Park offers beautiful gardens, woodland walks and open spaces perfect for a family day out. There’s even a free play area for children to enjoy.
